東京は 大阪より 大きいです — past & comparison

Past tense of nouns and adjectives, and comparisons with より, どちらが, and いちばん.

44
N / な-adj でしたPast of nouns & な-adjectives
Past tense

です → でした (was); じゃ ありません → じゃ ありませんでした (wasn't).

きのうは 雨でした

きのうは あめでした。

It was rainy yesterday.

Nouns and な-adjectives form the past by changing です to でした, and じゃ ありません to じゃ ありませんでした.

45
[い-adj]かったですPast of い-adjectives
Past tense

Drop い → かったです (was); negative → くなかったです.

旅行は 楽しかったです

りょこうは たのしかったです。

The trip was fun.

い-adjectives carry their own past tense: 〜い → 〜かったです, negative 〜くなかったです. Never add でした to an い-adjective.

Irregular: いい → よかったです.

46
N1 は N2 より [adj] / N1 のほうが N2 より [adj]より / のほうが — comparing two things
Comparison

N1 は N2 より 〜 = “N1 is more … than N2”. The same idea, foregrounding N1: N1 のほうが N2 より 〜.

東京は 大阪より 大きいです。

とうきょうは おおさかより おおきいです。

Tokyo is bigger than Osaka.

中国のほうが 日本より 大きいです。

ちゅうごくのほうが にほんより おおきいです。

China is bigger than Japan.

日本と カナダと どちらのほうが 寒いですか。…カナダのほうが 寒いです。

にほんと カナダと どちらのほうが さむいですか。…カナダのほうが さむいです。

Which is colder, Japan or Canada? … Canada is.

より marks the standard of comparison (“than …”). Japanese has no separate comparative form — the plain adjective does the job.

〜のほうが highlights the item that has “more” of the quality: N1 のほうが … = “N1 is the more … one”. より and のほうが often appear together and either may come first.

To ask, use A と B と どちらのほうが [adj]ですか (“Which of A and B is more …?”); the answer is 〜のほうが [adj]です. For comparisons you reply with のほうが, not はい/いいえ.

47
[group]で [question]が いちばん [adj]いちばん — the most
Comparison

いちばん before an adjective = the superlative (“the most …”).

果物で 何が いちばん 好きですか。

くだもので なにが いちばん すきですか。

Of fruits, which do you like best?

For “the most …” put いちばん before the adjective. The group you compare within takes で or の中で. To ask between just two, use どちらが.
