Your first steps in Japanese grammar with Minna no Nihongo I. Lessons 1–25 build the N5 core — です sentences, the particles は・が・を・に, and the polite ます, te- and nai-forms of verbs. Each point gives a rule, an example with native audio and a translation, plus practice to lock it in.
は marks the topic; です is a polite “is/are”. “[Topic] は [what it is] です.”

The negative of です is じゃ ありません (polite: では ありません).
サントスさんは がくせいじゃ ありません。
Mr Santos is not a student.
Add か to the end of a statement to turn it into a question. Word order does not change.
ミラーさんは かいしゃいんですか。
Is Mr Miller a company employee?
Put 何 exactly where the answer would stand and close with か. Before です and most counters it is read なん.
おしごとは なんですか。…エンジニアです。
What is your job? … I'm an engineer.
Replace は with も to say “also” — when the topic shares the same predicate as something already mentioned.
グプタさんも かいしゃいんです。
Mr Gupta is also an employee.
の joins two nouns: N2 is the main word, N1 is extra information about it (belonging, group, type). “N1's N2 / N2 of N1”.
ミラーさんは IMCの しゃいんです。
Mr Miller is an employee of IMC.
Stand-alone “thing” words: これ = near me, それ = near you, あれ = away from both.
This is a dictionary.
Use this set directly before a noun: この本 = “this book”. Never use これ before a noun.
この ほんは わたしのです。
This book is mine.
Answer a noun yes/no question with はい、そうです (yes, that's right) or いいえ、そうじゃ ありません (no, it isn't).
Is that a notebook? … Yes, it is.
Offer two choices by ending each with か: “Is it A, or is it B?” Answer with the noun, not はい/いいえ.
これは 「きゅう」ですか、「なな」ですか。…「きゅう」です。
Is this a 9 or a 7? … It's a 9.
When the noun after の is obvious, drop it: わたしの本 → わたしの (“mine”).
This is mine.
Place words: ここ near me, そこ near you, あそこ away from both. Polite: こちら／そちら／あちら.
This place is the office.
“[Thing] は [place] です” states the location of a thing or person.
でんわは にかいです。
The telephone is on the 2nd floor.
どこ = “where?”; どちら is the polite “where / which way?”.
Where is the toilet?
どこの N asks the origin or maker: “Which country's / company's N?” Answer with の.
これは どこの くるまですか。…にほんの くるまです。
Which country's car is this? … It's a Japanese car.
いくら = “how much?”. Prices are given in 〜円 (yen).
これは いくらですか。…さんびゃくえんです。
How much is this? … It's 300 yen.
Hours use 〜時, minutes use 〜分. 今 何時ですか = “What time is it now?”
いま くじじゅっぷんです。
It's 9:10 now.
ます = polite non-past (do / will do); ません = its negative (don't / won't).
まいにち にほんごを べんきょうします。
I study Japanese every day.
ました = past affirmative (did); ませんでした = past negative (didn't).
きのう はたらきました。
I worked yesterday.
Attach に to a clock time, day or date to say “at/on”: ７時に = “at 7”.
まいあさ ろくじに おきます。
I get up at 6 every morning.
から marks a start point, まで an end point — in time or space.
くじから ごじまで はたらきます。
I work from 9 to 5.
へ (read “e”) marks where you go/come/return. Used with 行きます, 来ます, 帰ります.
きょうとへ いきます。
I'm going to Kyoto.
で on a vehicle says how you travel: 電車で = “by train”.
でんしゃで かいしゃへ いきます。
I go to work by train.
と after a person means “(together) with”: 友達と = “with a friend”.
ともだちと にほんへ きました。
I came to Japan with a friend.
を (read “o”) marks the thing the action is done to.
まいあさ ジュースを のみます。
I drink juice every morning.
で marks where an action happens: レストランで 食べます = “eat at a restaurant”.
レストランで ひるごはんを たべます。
I eat lunch at a restaurant.
V-ませんか invites the listener to do something together: “Won't you …?”
いっしょに きょうとへ いきませんか。
Won't you go to Kyoto with me?
V-ましょう proposes doing something together: “Let's …”.
ちょっと やすみましょう。
Let's take a short break.
で marks the tool or method used: はしで 食べます = “eat with chopsticks”.
にほんごで レポートを かきます。
I write the report in Japanese.
に marks the receiver, を the gift: 友達に 花を あげます.
わたしは ともだちに はなを あげます。
I give flowers to a friend.
に marks the source you receive from: 友達に 本を もらいました.
ともだちに ほんを もらいました。
I received a book from a friend.
い-adjectives end in い. Negative: drop い → くないです.
This apple is delicious.
な-adjectives behave like nouns with です. Negative: じゃ ありません.
この まちは きれいです。
This town is pretty.
い-adj attaches directly (新しい 車); な-adj adds な (きれいな 花).
あたらしい くるまを かいました。
I bought a new car.
The object of 好き (like), 嫌い (dislike), 上手 (good at), 下手 (bad at) is marked with が.
わたしは にほんごが すきです。
I like Japanese.
わかります (understand) and あります (have) also take が for their object.
ミラーさんは にほんごが わかります。
Mr Miller understands Japanese.
Put から after a reason clause to mean “because / so”.
じかんが ありませんから、いきません。
I won't go, because I have no time.
あります for non-living things, います for living beings (people, animals).
あそこに ぎんこうが あります。
There is a bank over there.
に marks the location of existence: 机の上に 本が あります.
つくえの うえに ほんが あります。
There is a book on the desk.
When the thing is the topic, use は…に あります: 銀行は 駅の前に あります.
ぎんこうは えきの まえに あります。
The bank is in front of the station.
Japanese counts with counters: 〜つ (general things), 〜人 (people), 〜枚, 〜台…
りんごを よっつ かいます。
I'll buy four apples.
A length of time before the verb says how long: １時間 勉強します.
まいにち いちじかん にほんごを べんきょうします。
I study Japanese for one hour every day.
“X times per period”: １週間に ２回 = “twice a week”.
いっしゅうかんに にかい テニスを します。
I play tennis twice a week.
です → でした (was); じゃ ありません → じゃ ありませんでした (wasn't).
きのうは あめでした。
It was rainy yesterday.
Drop い → かったです (was); negative → くなかったです.
りょこうは たのしかったです。
The trip was fun.
N1 は N2 より 〜 = “N1 is more … than N2”. The same idea, foregrounding N1: N1 のほうが N2 より 〜.
とうきょうは おおさかより おおきいです。
Tokyo is bigger than Osaka.
いちばん before an adjective = the superlative (“the most …”).
くだもので なにが いちばん すきですか。
Of fruits, which do you like best?
N が ほしいです = “I want N” (a thing). The thing wanted takes が.
あたらしい くるまが ほしいです。
I want a new car.
Replace ます with たいです to say “want to (do)”: 行きたいです.
にほんへ いきたいです。
I want to go to Japan.
Verb-stem + に + 行きます = “go (somewhere) in order to do …”.
デパートへ かいものに いきます。
I'm going to the department store to shop.
A connective verb form used in many patterns. 書きます → 書いて, 食べます → 食べて.
ちょっと まってください。
Please wait a moment.
て-form + ください makes a polite request: 名前を 書いてください.
ここに なまえを かいてください。
Please write your name here.
て-form + います = an action in progress right now.
いま あめが ふっています。
It's raining now.
て-form + も いいです gives or asks permission: “may (do)”.
しゃしんを とっても いいですか。
May I take a photo?
て-form + は いけません forbids: “must not / may not do”.
ここで たばこを すっては いけません。
You must not smoke here.
ています also marks a continuing state, job or habit: 銀行で 働いています.
ミラーさんは IMCで はたらいています。
Mr Miller works at IMC.
Use て to list actions in order: “do A, (then) do B …”.
あさ おきて、コーヒーを のみます。
I get up in the morning and drink coffee.
て-form + から = “after doing A, B”. Emphasises that B follows A.
しごとが おわってから、のみに いきます。
After work finishes, I go for a drink.
い-adj: 〜くて; な-adj/noun: 〜で. “…and…”: 広くて、明るい.
この へやは ひろくて、あかるいです。
This room is spacious and bright.
ない-form + で ください asks someone NOT to do something.
ここに くるまを とめないで ください。
Please don't park your car here.
Obligation: drop ない → なければ なりません (“must”).
まいにち くすりを のまなければ なりません。
I have to take medicine every day.
Permission NOT to do: 〜なくても いいです (“you don't have to”).
あした こなくても いいです。
You don't have to come tomorrow.
The plain non-past form listed in dictionaries: 行きます → 行く, 食べます → 食べる.
わたしは にほんごを はなす ことが できます。
I can speak Japanese.
Dictionary form + ことが できます expresses ability or possibility.
ミラーさんは かんじを よむ ことが できます。
Mr Miller can read kanji.
Dictionary form + まえに = “before (doing)”. With time: ３日まえに.
ねる まえに、ほんを よみます。
I read a book before sleeping.
た-form + ことが あります = “have (once) done …” (experience).
わたしは にほんへ いった ことが あります。
I have been to Japan.
List representative actions: 〜たり、〜たり します.
にちようびは そうじしたり、せんたくしたり します。
On Sundays I do things like cleaning and laundry.
い-adj: 〜く なります; な-adj/noun: 〜に なります. “become …”.
さむく なりました。
It has got cold.
ます → dictionary/ない/た forms; です → だ. Used with close people.
あした きょうとへ いく。
I'm going to Kyoto tomorrow. (casual)
In plain style, です becomes だ (often dropped in casual speech).
これ、わたしの ほんだ。
This is my book. (casual)
Plain-form clause + と 思います = “I think that …”.
あした あめが ふると おもいます。
I think it will rain tomorrow.
と marks a quote before 言います. Direct quotes use 「」.
たなかさんは 「あした やすみます」と いいました。
Mr Tanaka said, “I'll take tomorrow off.”
でしょう = a guess (“probably”) or, with rising tone, “…right?”.
あした はれるでしょう。
It will probably be sunny tomorrow.
A plain-form clause placed before a noun describes it: ［…が 作った］ケーキ.
これは ミラーさんが つくった ケーキです。
This is the cake that Mr Miller made.
The modified noun can play any role, e.g. the topic of the main sentence.
きのう みた えいがは おもしろかったです。
The film I saw yesterday was interesting.
Clause + とき sets the time: “when …”. The verb tense before とき matters.
にほんへ いくとき、カメラを かいました。
When I went to Japan, I bought a camera (before going).
Dictionary form + と = “whenever A, (always) B” — automatic consequence.
この ボタンを おすと、ドアが あきます。
When you press this button, the door opens.
て-form + あげます = do a favour for someone else.
わたしは ともだちに ほんを かして あげました。
I lent a book to my friend (as a favour).
て-form + くれます = someone does a favour for me/my side.
ともだちが てつだって くれました。
My friend helped me (for my benefit).
て-form + もらいます = receive the favour of someone doing something.
わたしは ともだちに みちを おしえて もらいました。
I had my friend tell me the way.
