Masu-form (ます): the polite verb ending

The ます-form is the polite present-future of a verb, and the first verb form most courses teach. It carries its own past, negative and past-negative endings, which is what these cards cover.

Masu-form

ます = polite non-past (do / will do); ません = its negative (don't / won't).

毎日 日本語を 勉強します

まいにち にほんごを べんきょうします。

I study Japanese every day.

あした 働きません

あした はたらきません。

I won't work tomorrow.

The ます-form is the polite verb form. It covers both present and future. The negative replaces ます with ません. The verb always comes at the end of the sentence.

ました = past affirmative (did); ませんでした = past negative (didn't).

きのう 働きました

きのう はたらきました。

I worked yesterday.

きのう 勉強しませんでした

きのう べんきょうしませんでした。

I didn't study yesterday.

For the past, ます → ました and ません → ませんでした. These four endings (ます/ません/ました/ませんでした) cover all polite tenses and polarities.
