17
今 N時 N分ですTelling the time
Time

Hours use 〜時, minutes use 〜分. 今 何時ですか = “What time is it now?”

今 910です。

いま くじじゅっぷんです。

It's 9:10 now.

Counters 時 (o'clock) and 分 (minute) attach to numbers. Several readings are irregular: 4時 = よじ, 9時 = くじ, and 分 becomes ぷん/ふん depending on the number.

18
V-ます / V-ませんPolite verbs — present/future
Masu-form

ます = polite non-past (do / will do); ません = its negative (don't / won't).

毎日 日本語を 勉強します

まいにち にほんごを べんきょうします。

I study Japanese every day.

あした 働きません

あした はたらきません。

I won't work tomorrow.

The ます-form is the polite verb form. It covers both present and future. The negative replaces ます with ません. The verb always comes at the end of the sentence.

19
V-ました / V-ませんでしたPolite verbs — past
Masu-form

ました = past affirmative (did); ませんでした = past negative (didn't).

きのう 働きました

きのう はたらきました。

I worked yesterday.

きのう 勉強しませんでした

きのう べんきょうしませんでした。

I didn't study yesterday.

For the past, ます → ました and ません → ませんでした. These four endings (ます/ません/ました/ませんでした) cover all polite tenses and polarities.

20
N時 に Vに — at a specific time
に particle

Attach に to a clock time, day or date to say “at/on”: 7時に = “at 7”.

毎朝 6時 起きます。

まいあさ ろくじに おきます。

I get up at 6 every morning.

に marks a point in time with a number (clock times, dates, days of the week). Relative time words like きょう, あした, 毎日 do NOT take に.

21
N から N までから / まで — from / to
から / まで

から marks a start point, まで an end point — in time or space.

9時から 5時まで 働きます。

くじから ごじまで はたらきます。

I work from 9 to 5.

から = “from” (start), まで = “to/until” (end). They work for times (9時から) and places (東京から). Either can be used alone.

  • 〜ね at the end seeks agreement: いい 天気ですね = “Nice weather, isn't it?”
