Lesson 4N5Genki I

The First Date — existence & past

20
N が あります / いますあります / います — there is
Existence

あります for non-living things, います for living beings (people, animals).

あそこに 銀行が あります。

あそこに ぎんこうが あります。

There is a bank over there.

部屋に 猫が います。

へやに ねこが います。

There is a cat in the room.

Both mean “there is/exists”. Choose by animacy: あります for objects, plants, events; います for people and animals. The thing that exists is marked with が.

21
N1 は N2 の [うえ/した/まえ…] ですRelative position — X は Y の うえ/した/まえ…Genki
Location

Say where X is relative to Y: X は Y の [position word] です.

銀行は 図書館の となりです。

ぎんこうは としょかんの となりです。

The bank is next to the library.

かさは テーブルの 下です。

かさは テーブルの したです。

The umbrella is under the table.

レストランは スーパーと 病院の あいだです。

レストランは スーパーと びょういんの あいだです。

The restaurant is between the supermarket and the hospital.

Position nouns combine with の: Y の うえ (above/on Y). Common ones: うえ (on/above), した (under), まえ (in front), うしろ (behind), なか (inside), となり (next to), みぎ/ひだり (right/left). “Between A and B” is A と B の あいだ.

To do an action at that spot, use で (the action-place particle): 駅の 前で 待ちます = “I'll wait in front of the station.”

22
N / な-adj でしたPast of nouns & な-adjectives
Past tense

です → でした (was); じゃ ありません → じゃ ありませんでした (wasn't).

きのうは 雨でした。

きのうは あめでした。

It was rainy yesterday.

Nouns and な-adjectives form the past by changing です to でした, and じゃ ありません to じゃ ありませんでした.

23
V-ました / V-ませんでしたPolite verbs — past
Masu-form

ました = past affirmative (did); ませんでした = past negative (didn't).

きのう 働きました。

きのう はたらきました。

I worked yesterday.

きのう 勉強しませんでした。

きのう べんきょうしませんでした。

I didn't study yesterday.

For the past, ます → ました and ません → ませんでした. These four endings (ます/ません/ました/ませんでした) cover all polite tenses and polarities.

24
N1 と N2と — and (listing nouns)Genki
と particle

と between nouns means “and”, listing them exhaustively: A と B = “A and B”.

日本語と 英語を 話します。

にほんごと えいごを はなします。

I speak Japanese and English.

京都と 大阪へ 行きました。

きょうとと おおさかへ いきました。

I went to Kyoto and Osaka.

This と joins two (or more) nouns into a complete list, “A and B”. For an open-ended list (“… and so on”) use や instead. Don't confuse it with the other と that marks a companion (“together with”).

  • The same particle と also means “together with (a person)” — see that card.
