い-adjectives end in い. Negative: drop い → くないです.
この りんごは おいしいです 。 This apple is delicious.
この ケーキは あまり 甘くないです 。 この ケーキは あまり あまくないです。
This cake isn't very sweet.
い-adjectives end in い and carry their own tense. Negative non-past: 〜い → 〜くないです (or 〜くありません). Note いい (good) is irregular: よくないです.
な-adjectives behave like nouns with です. Negative: じゃ ありません.
この 町は きれいです 。 この まちは きれいです。
This town is pretty.
この 部屋は 静かじゃ ありません 。 この へやは しずかじゃ ありません。
This room isn't quiet.
な-adjectives conjugate like nouns: 〜です / 〜じゃ ありません. They are called “な” because they take な when placed before a noun (next point).
Drop い → かったです (was); negative → くなかったです.
旅行は 楽しかったです 。 りょこうは たのしかったです。
The trip was fun.
い-adjectives carry their own past tense: 〜い → 〜かったです, negative 〜くなかったです. Never add でした to an い-adjective.
Irregular: いい → よかったです.
い-adj attaches directly (新しい 車); な-adj adds な (きれいな 花).
新しい 車を 買いました。 あたらしい くるまを かいました。
I bought a new car.
きれいな 花ですね。 きれいな はなですね。
What pretty flowers!
To describe a noun, place the adjective in front of it. い-adjectives attach as they are; な-adjectives insert な between the adjective and the noun.
とても = “very”; あまり + negative = “not very”. 〜が、〜 joins two clauses as “but”: きれいですが、狭いです. The object of 好き (like), 嫌い (dislike), 上手 (good at), 下手 (bad at) is marked with が.
わたしは 日本語 が 好き です。 わたしは にほんごが すきです。
I like Japanese.
These are adjectives of feeling/ability. What you like or are good at is marked with が, not を: [person]は [thing]が 好きです.
V-ましょう proposes doing something together: “Let's …”.
ちょっと 休みましょう 。 ちょっと やすみましょう。
Let's take a short break.
ましょう expresses “let's”. It is also the natural reply when accepting a ませんか invitation: 行きませんか → ええ、行きましょう.
Japanese counts with counters: 〜つ (general things), 〜人 (people), 〜枚, 〜台…
りんごを 4つ 買います。 りんごを よっつ かいます。
I'll buy four apples.
教室に 学生が 5人 います。 きょうしつに がくせいが ごにん います。
There are five students in the classroom.
A number alone is not enough — Japanese adds a counter that fits the kind of thing. The counting expression usually sits right before the verb. The native series ひとつ・ふたつ・みっつ… (〜つ) counts general objects up to ten.
