A connective verb form used in many patterns. 書きます → 書いて, 食べます → 食べて.
ちょっと 待って ください。 ちょっと まってください。
Please wait a moment.
The て-form is a non-final verb form that links to many endings. Its sound changes follow the verb group (く→いて, ぐ→いで, む/ぶ/ぬ→んで, う/つ/る→って, す→して; する→して, 来る→来て).
て-form + ください makes a polite request: 名前を 書いてください.
ここに 名前を 書いてください 。 ここに なまえを かいてください。
Please write your name here.
て-form + ください asks someone to do something politely. It is also used to offer/instruct (どうぞ 入ってください).
Use て to list actions in order: “do A, (then) do B …”.
朝 起きて 、コーヒーを 飲みます。 あさ おきて、コーヒーを のみます。
I get up in the morning and drink coffee.
Chained て-forms describe actions in sequence; only the final verb carries the tense and politeness for the whole chain.
て-form + も いいです gives or asks permission: “may (do)”.
写真を 撮っても いいですか 。 しゃしんを とっても いいですか。
May I take a photo?
て-form + も いいです(か) asks for or grants permission. An affirmative answer is ええ、いいですよ; to refuse, see the next point.
て-form + は いけません forbids: “must not / may not do”.
ここで たばこを 吸っては いけません 。 ここで たばこを すっては いけません。
You must not smoke here.
て-form + は いけません states a prohibition. It is fairly strong, so softer wording is often used with people of higher status.
Put から after a reason clause to mean “because / so”.
時間が ありません から 、行きません。 じかんが ありませんから、いきません。
I won't go, because I have no time.
から after a full clause states a reason: [reason]から、[result]. Unlike English “because”, the reason comes first.
どうして = “why?”; the answer ends in 〜から. Besides “shall we …?”, V-ましょうか offers to do something FOR someone: “Shall I …? / Let me …”.
にもつを 持ちましょうか 。 にもつを もちましょうか。
Shall I carry your bag?
(わたしが) やりましょうか 。 Shall I do it?
Same form as the “let's” ましょうか, but here the speaker alone performs the action as a favour — often with (わたしが).
Compare ませんか, which invites the listener to join you, and ましょう, which proposes doing it together.
