Japanese has two adjective classes that conjugate differently: い-adjectives carry tense themselves, な-adjectives lean on です. Telling them apart is the whole game.

※ いい is irregular: its negative and past come from よい (よくない, よかった). な-adjectives behave like nouns with です.
い-adjectives end in い. Negative: drop い → くないです.
This apple is delicious.
この ケーキは あまり あまくないです。
This cake isn't very sweet.
い-adjectives end in い and carry their own tense. Negative non-past: 〜い → 〜くないです (or 〜くありません). Note いい (good) is irregular: よくないです.

この まちは きれいです。
This town is pretty.
この へやは しずかじゃ ありません。
This room isn't quiet.
な-adjectives conjugate like nouns: 〜です / 〜じゃ ありません. They are called “な” because they take な when placed before a noun (next point).

What pretty flowers!
To describe a noun, place the adjective in front of it. い-adjectives attach as they are; な-adjectives insert な between the adjective and the noun.

Make the person the topic (は) and the part the subject (が): トムさんは 髪が 長いです = “Tom has long hair.”
トムさんは かみが ながいです。
Tom has long hair.
ぞうは はなが ながいです。
Elephants have long trunks.
To describe a part or feature of a person or thing, the whole becomes the topic with は and the specific part takes が, then the adjective: ［whole］は ［part］が ［adj］です. It's more natural than ［whole］の ［part］は ［adj］です.
Frozen idioms follow the same frame: 背が 高い／低い (tall/short), 頭が いい (smart).
