Potential form (可能形): saying you can do something

The potential form turns 食べる into 食べられる — can eat. Note what happens to the object particle: potential sentences usually take が where the plain verb took を.

Also known aspotential form可能形kanoukeican do in Japaneserareru form

How the 可能形 is formed

Group I: shift the final う-row kana to the え-row and add る (書く→書ける). Group II: replace る with られる. Group III is irregular. The object usually takes が: 日本語が 話せます.

※ In casual speech Group II often drops the ら (ら抜き言葉): 食べられる → 食べれる. ※ 分かる already means “to be able to understand”, so it has no potential form.

1
V (potential)Potential form — can do
Potential form

The potential form expresses ability: 話す→話せる, 食べる→食べられる, する→できる.

わたしは 日本語が 話せます

わたしは にほんごが はなせます。

I can speak Japanese.

Group I: change the final う-row sound to the え-row + る (書く→書ける, 飲む→飲める). Group II: ます-stem + られる (食べる→食べられる). Irregular: する→できる, 来る→来られる.

The object of a potential verb is usually marked with が (not を): 日本語が 話せます.

2
N が 見えます / 聞こえます見えます / 聞こえます — visible / audible
Potential form

Spontaneous perception (without effort): something is visible (見えます) or audible (聞こえます).

部屋から 海が 見えます

へやから うみが みえます。

You can see the sea from the room.

見えます/聞こえます describe what naturally comes into view or hearing, not a deliberate ability (which would be 見られます/聞けます). The thing perceived takes が.

3
N が できますできます — can / be completed
Potential form

できます covers ability (N が できます), and also “be finished / come into being”: 家が できました.

新しい 家が できました

あたらしい いえが できました。

The new house is finished.

田中さんは テニスが できます

たなかさんは テニスが できます。

Mr Tanaka can play tennis.

As a potential, できます says you can do something (the noun takes が): テニスが できます, 日本語が できます. It is also the potential of する.

できます also means “be completed / be ready / come to exist”: 新しい 家が できました (the house got built), 友達が できました (I made a friend), 食事が できました (the meal is ready).

4
V(potential) ように なりますようになる — come to be able
Potential form

A change to a new ability or situation: 〜ように なりました.

日本語が 話せるように なりました

にほんごが はなせるように なりました。

I've become able to speak Japanese.

Potential (or dictionary) form + ように なる marks a gradual change to a new state or ability (couldn't → can). Negative: 〜なくなりました.
