Nai-form (ない): the plain negative

ない is the plain negative of a verb — the dictionary form's counterpart. It is also a stem in its own right: ないでください, なければなりません and なくてもいいです are all built from it.

How the ない形 is formed

For 五段 verbs the final kana shifts to the あ-row, then + ない. Note: う → わ, not あ.

Nai-form

ない-form + で ください asks someone NOT to do something.

ここに 車を 止めないで ください

ここに くるまを とめないで ください。

Please don't park your car here.

The ない-form is the plain negative (行きます → 行かない, 食べます → 食べない, する → しない, 来る → 来ない). Add で ください for a negative request.

Nai-form

Obligation: drop ない → なければ なりません (“must”).

毎日 薬を 飲まなければ なりません

まいにち くすりを のまなければ なりません。

I have to take medicine every day.

From the ない-form, drop い and add ければ なりません: 飲まない → 飲まなければ なりません = “must drink”. A common casual variant is 〜なきゃ.

Nai-form

Permission NOT to do: 〜なくても いいです (“you don't have to”).

あした 来なくても いいです

あした こなくても いいです。

You don't have to come tomorrow.

From the ない-form, drop い and add くても いいです: 来ない → 来なくても いいです = “need not come”.

V-ないで、…ないで — without / instead of doing
Nai-form

Do the main action without doing another: 〜ないで、….

けさは 朝ごはんを 食べないで、学校へ 行きました。

けさは あさごはんを たべないで、がっこうへ いきました。

This morning I went to school without eating breakfast.

ない-form + で describes the circumstance of the main action: doing B without (doing) A, or instead of A. Different from 〜なくて (cause).
