How the て形 is formed

The dictionary-form ending decides what you get. The grouping is identical to the other form — only た/だ ↔ て/で changes.

※ 行く is irregular: its て/た-form is 行って / 行った, not 行いて.

V-てThe て-form

て-form

A connective verb form used in many patterns. 書きます → 書いて, 食べます → 食べて.

The て-form is a non-final verb form that links to many endings. Its sound changes follow the verb group (く→いて, ぐ→いで, む/ぶ/ぬ→んで, う/つ/る→って, す→して; する→して, 来る→来て).

V-てくださいてください — please do

て-form

て-form + ください makes a polite request: 名前を書いてください.

ここに　名前を　書いてください。

ここに　なまえを　かいてください。

Please write your name here.

て-form + ください asks someone to do something politely. It is also used to offer/instruct (どうぞ入ってください).

V-ていますています — be doing (progressive)

て-form

て-form + います = an action in progress right now.

今　雨が　降っています。

いま　あめが　ふっています。

It's raining now.

て-form + います expresses an ongoing action (“is …-ing”). (In lesson 15 the same form also expresses ongoing states.)

V-ましょうか offers help: 手伝いましょうか = “Shall I help?”
