「立入禁止」と 書いてあります — commands & signs

The blunt imperative and prohibitive forms, and reading signs with 〜と書いてあります / 〜という意味です.

Imperative

Blunt command (行け, 食べろ, しろ, 来い) and prohibition (dictionary + な: 行くな).

「危ない、止まれ！」

「あぶない、とまれ！」

“Danger — stop!”

Imperative: Group I う-row → え-row (行く→行け); Group II stem + ろ (食べる→食べろ); する→しろ, 来る→来い. Prohibition: dictionary form + な (見るな).

These sound rough — used on signs, in emergencies, in sports, or by men among close friends; otherwise far too direct.

と書いてあります = “it says …”; 〜という意味です = “it means …”.

入口に　「立入禁止」と　書いてあります。

いりぐちに　「たちいりきんし」と　かいてあります。

It says “No Entry” at the entrance.

と quotes the words written or said; 書いてあります reports what a sign/notice says. 〜は どういう 意味ですか asks a meaning; 〜という 意味です gives it.
