ニュースを聞いて、びっくりしました — reasons

Giving reasons softly with ので, and the て-form as the cause of a feeling or state.

～ので、…ので — because (softer)

Reason

Like から, but softer and more polite; attaches to the plain form.

用事が　あるので、お先に　失礼します。

ようじが　あるので、おさきに　しつれいします。

I have an errand, so I'll leave first (excuse me).

ので presents the reason as objective and is softer than から — common when excusing yourself or making polite requests. Na-adjectives/nouns add な: 静かなので, 病気なので.

～て、…て — cause of a feeling

Reason

The て-form can link a cause to an involuntary reaction (surprise, worry…).

そのニュースを　聞いて、びっくりしました。

そのニュースを　きいて、びっくりしました。

I was surprised to hear that news.

When the second clause is an emotion or involuntary state (びっくりする, 安心する, 困る), て marks its cause. The second clause can't be a command or invitation.
