～かどうか / 疑問詞＋かembedded question — whether

Embed a yes/no question with 〜かどうか, or a wh-question with 疑問詞 + か.

山田さんが　来るかどうか　わかりません。

やまださんが　くるかどうか　わかりません。

I don't know whether Mr Yamada is coming.

A yes/no question becomes 〜かどうか (whether or not); a wh-question keeps its question word + か (どこで買ったか). The embedded clause is in plain form.

V-てみますてみる — try doing

て-form

Do something to see how it goes: て-form + みます.

この　くつを　はいてみます。

I'll try on these shoes.

て + みる means trying an action to check the result or experience it (試着, 試食…). It comes from 見る (“see (how it is)”).
