つもり, 予定 and the volitional: talking about plans

つもり is what you intend, 予定 what is scheduled, and the volitional よう/おう is the plain-form counterpart of ましょう. The difference is how settled the plan is.

Intention

The plain form of 〜ましょう: 行く→行こう, 食べる→食べよう, する→しよう.

週末は うちで ゆっくり 休もう

しゅうまつは うちで ゆっくり やすもう。

Let's relax at home this weekend.

Group I: う-row → お-row + う (行く→行こう, 飲む→飲もう). Group II: ます-stem + よう (食べる→食べよう). Irregular: する→しよう, 来る→来よう. It's the casual equivalent of ましょう.

Add と思っています to state a held intention: 国へ 帰ろうと 思っています = “I'm thinking of going home.”

Intention

A firm personal intention: dictionary form + つもりです (negative: ない-form + つもり).

夏休みに 国へ 帰るつもりです

なつやすみに くにへ かえるつもりです。

I intend to go home over the summer break.

つもり expresses a plan you've decided on yourself. Negative: 〜ないつもりです (intend not to) or 〜つもりはありません (have no intention).

For arranged schedules/plans: 〜予定です.

会議は 3時から 始まる予定です

かいぎは さんじから はじまるよていです。

The meeting is scheduled to start at 3.

予定 marks a fixed, often official schedule — more impersonal than つもり. With a noun: 旅行の 予定です.

Intention

Make a habit/effort: 〜ように しています (negative: 〜ない ように します).

毎日 運動するように しています

まいにち うんどうするように しています。

I make a point of exercising every day.

〜ように します = try to do regularly; 〜ように しています = make it an ongoing habit. With ない: avoid doing (甘い物を 食べないように しています).
